Daniel Caesar Displays his “Superpowers” at 713 Music Hall

I will start this off with a little confession, I really did not know much about Daniel Caesar or his music when I entered the venue. I actually had never been to 713 Music Hall either so it was an entirely new experience for me. However, I was absolutely blown away by his show! It started with a live feed of him making his way to the stage and the crowd chanting his name until we could see him. It was so sick ! He then took center stage with his band surrounded by a white sheer canopy. It was visually beautiful, especially with the tour’s lighting production. The stage design itself was very minimalist but in a way that actually accentuated his artistry and music. Surrounding Caesar we could see large monitors to the left, right & even below him that showed corresponding visuals tto each song and served as a backdrop for him and his band.

One of my absolute favorite moments of the show was when the cloth canopy dropped down during “Cyanide” which gave us our first real look of Daniel and his band. His live vocals exceeded my expectations based off listening to his recordings which I have been listening to ever since. I was incredibly impressed with his stage presence and the atmosphere him and his team created for the night. The crowd was engaged throughout his entire performance. He went song after song after song without many pauses to speak to the crowd but he made sure to interact and have the audience sing with or for him. At one point, he said “You guys sound beautiful!”, during an reaction with the crowd.

During his set, he treated us to some live demonstrations on the piano and guitar. One moment that really stood out to me, was his guitar solo towards the end of “Shot My Baby”. Not only was it a great solo, but at one point he was playing the guitar behind his head! Every show, he asks someone for a recommendation of what he should play. However this time, he had already chosen to play an unreleased track of his track called “Indecision” that he released on Twitter. Some of my favorite songs on the set that ended upon repeat for me are “Japanese Denim“, “Please Do Not Lean“, and “Entropy“. The vivacity and sound of these songs stood out to me and were just so fun to watch his perform. However, if I had to boil it down to one song I’d say my overall favorite was “Always”. The lyricism and artistry was just so satisfying that I couldn’t get it out if my head after the show ended.

As the show neared its end Caesar wrapped up with his encore track “Streetcar”, from outside the venue ! No, really, he actually performed from a trailer outside the venue through a live feed. It was definitely the most unique way I have ever seen an encore be presented. His concert in general was incredibly unique! At the very end of the show, credits rolled through the monitor with the names of everyone on his crew. I thought that was incredibly sweet and considerate but it also made me feel like I had just finished watching a movie. This concert definitely made me a fan of his and I’m so grateful I was given the opportunity to go. This is a performance that I definitely will never forget. If you have yet to see Caesar live, make it top of your bucket list !
