A strange crowd formed Wednesday night at White Oak Music Hall as the line to get in extended down the street. Hyper-Pop duo Dylan Brady and Laura Les better known as 100 Gecs, were making their Houston stop on the 10000 Gecs Tour in support of their upcoming release 10000 Gecs. Following a series of sold out dates, the Houston stop was no exception as fans were packed wall to wall to see what might be the groups first Houston show. Coming from St. Louis, 100 Gecs energy behind their music is far from your typical pop, and the crowd that night was a great reflection of what everyone was about to experience. Concertgoers were sporting outfits as if Halloween had been rescheduled with people dressed as Wizards and Witches and sporting robes and Kimonos. It was quite a site.
With Underscores opening the night up, the vibes were being set. An intense strobe light display began as dance music boomed through the speakers. It was as if we had been taken to the 80s-90s club days with everyone quickly catching the beat and began dancing, completely indulged in the music. It was a fitting opener to get everyone pumped for what the night was about to bring.
Soon after Underscores finished their set and a brief intermission, two HUGE stereo speakers appeared on stage. With a quick flash of the lights the duo emerged sporting their brightly colored wizard robes and Dylan with his tall pointy hat! Opening with the track “Hey Big Man” the floor could be felt vibrating from the crowds in sync jumping. The energy 100 Gecs brought with their heavy rap influence in the first song was amazing. Following with the song “Stupid Horse” began the signature, fun auto tune sound that the group is know for.
The music itself is hard to explain, being a mix of experimental elements wrapped up in high octave pitched lyrics, it’s normally a “you get it or you don’t.” But that night the room was full of people who definitely love the group. Singing along to songs “757” the night was filled with fun dancing and people moshing, even crowd surfing commenced. They played some new tracks as well but ended the night with “Money Machine.” One of there most notable songs from the duo. But of course the crowd wanted more, and they did not disappoint. Coming out for the encore ending the night with “800lb Cloud” it was defiant a magical evening and honestly, even if you are not a fan of the group, or if their music is “too out there”, the shows are still super fun and one is definitely guaranteed to have a good time! I hope it’s not long for them to visit Houston again, especially with talks of a new project coming soon.
