The superstars of Regional Mexican music, Fuerza Regida, were ready to party in Houston, TX to perform back-to-back shows for their “Otra Peda” tour. As you arrived to the venue the energy was felt and the excitement could be seen on people’s faces. Fans were eagerly ready for the show to start at Smart Financial Centre.
A video began to play on the screen revolving around the story of how Grupo Regida came to be. It began with JOP riding a scooter through his hometown in San Bernardino, CA. He was on his way to cut hair for a friend, his friend mentioned he knew someone who was looking to start a band and all they were missing was a bass player. He asked JOP if he was interested and he stated he hadn’t played the bass in months but was willing to give it a shot. On that same day, they made it official and began to call themselves Grupo Regida, and that is where their journey began.
The camera cut into a live stream of them backstage at the venue walking out to “Peaches and Eggplants” by Young Nudy ft. 21 Savage, which got the crowd hyped up! As JOP made his way to the stage he stopped and cupped his hand over his ear pretending he couldn’t hear the crowd which led to the them cheering insanely louder.
JOP rushed the stage as trumpets and trombones flared to the melody of “Mi Terre CLN” building up to the sounds of drums pounding loudly, amplifying each strike as confetti shot into the air. What a way to start the show, creating a dramatic entrance ready to take over the stage.
The atmosphere during a Fuerza Regida show is a fusion of traditional and contemporary Mexican musical influences. A distinctive sound that blends in elements from corridors, banda, and other regional genres. This vibrant concert with very talented musicians created a dynamic exchange that fueled the performance. People were dancing to the rhythm, singing the lyrics of their favorite songs, and yelling out their best gritos having the time of their lives.
There were a lot of memorable moments throughout the show. Fuerza Regida sold out their first night at Smart Financial Centre. A venue that seats 6,400 people! Selling out a show is a huge accomplishment and to honor doing so they brought out a gifted cardboard-like ticket that said: “SOLD OUT”. JOP stood in front of the crowd embracing the moment surrounded by thousands of fans all while thanking all of them for coming out to support them!
We even got a special guest performance from Chino Pacas! Pacas is an upcoming talented artist signed under JOP’s label “Street Mob Records”. He introduced him to the crowd and performed their single “Dijon Que No La Ina Lograr” (They Said That They Couldn’t Achieve It) signifying their journey to success.
Another favorite moment of mine was a skit they carried out during the show, after performing “Chrysler 300” the lights turned off which left fans questioning what was going to happen next. Fans chanted “JOP!” then suddenly the lights cut back on. To the crowd’s surprise there was a porta potty on stage with a line behind it waiting to “use” it. Once the door opened we heard the trombone and clarinets start to play “Que Se Te Quito?”. A song about cocaine getting rid of your slumber and keeping the party going til late at night. One by one we saw everyone walk out of the porta potty as if they had just partaken in the party favor and were then fully “energized” to keep the show going. Such a funny gag!
As the final song approached, the energy intensified as if everyone in the venue knew that this was the climax of an unforgettable performance. They closed out their show to “TQM” as their closing finale. Striding across the stage and reaching out to the crowd as the final notes played, confetti exploded with JOP saying “See you tomorrow Houston!”. This was the ending of their first show out of two here in Houston.
After witnessing such an incredible live performance from Fuerza Regida, I was filled with adrenaline that coursed through my veins and I wanted more! Overall it was a great experience and I recommend putting Fuerza Regida on your radar. Next time they come back be prepared, for as JOP says, for “Otra Peda”.
