Step Into A New World With Starlight Jones’ Newest Album ‘Starlight’

Minneapolis has been on the search for talent whether it be in sports, fashion, or music. Being from a city where no one is represented internationally, other than Prince and very few others. There are no immediate processors to what Starlight is doing. His content control is incredible, not just in the field of music, also in fashion and cinematography, which makes this album even more relevant than what someone would expect. Starlight Jones embodies this new idea for Minneapolis by bringing creatives together, and contributing to the team. With the vocal extravagance on ‘Milan’ which is refined in expensive taste and wealth it feels like a song you would play on a private beach with your WCW. ‘Way To Much’ is the song that made me take a step further into this review. During the process of writing this I linked up with Basey, the main Producer working on Starlight’s debut.

JM: What would you say about Starlight when he comes over to make music? This album is incredible but How was the process working with Starlight?

Basey: Well, to be honest, every time he walked in he was ready to record. There was maybe one song when he had to reference back to his cellphone, and then it was like the rest he would freestyle or already have the verse memorized.

JM: Now far as beat selection did you both sit in here and create the music all in the same room?

Basey: Yeah, for sure, I would let him freestyle over an unfinished beat basically and we’ll take it from there. Most of the time I won’t have a full beat finish, I like to work with the artist so we can both bounce off the energy.

The album officially dropped May 1st, and what you should expect from this album is a vocal exercise. Its fast paced rhythmic songwriting is oozing with romantic revival. This album reminds me of a newer rendition of Nelly’s “Nellyville” keeping its slower paced tracks near the middle of the album giving those slow songs room to breath after he goes on his party crazed tracks. This album is really easy to follow, it’s not an album that will give you a lyrical high, but what will get you get from this album is a sinuous vocal performance that you can’t ignore. This body work is refreshingly clear, with no inaudible lyrics that would take away from his vocal performance. It’s well practiced, it has all the fundamentals to a dope-ass album. It’s not another fake trap mixtape over Youtube beats with unbearable struggle bars. No. It’s bright, it’s organic, the songwriting is glorious and yet familiar. On the song ‘Secrets’ you are allowed into his world of insecurities, uncertainty of love, being misled over and over. The consistency in his voice allows him to make the same song if he wants too and it will sound that good. Once the world is allowed to reopen I can already see Downtown Minneapolis lighting up to Starlight performances. Most of these songs can be performed, the track ‘Go In’ has to be the best song I’ve ever heard that hasn’t made it to radio. Minneapolis has its blueprint for musical success.

This album is a Heavy 6/Light 7. Let me know what stood out to you most on this album! Who had the best feature? Let us know in the comments below! You can stream Starlight on all major platforms.
