People gathered at the Smart Financial Centre as temperatures dropped down Friday evening in Sugarland, Texas for an evening of comedy with George Lopez on his Houston stop for the OMG Hi! Tour. The evening started out a little different than your typical comedy show by having a Mariachi Band open up the show as people gathered in. The amazing opening group Mariachi Imperial, hails from Houston and have been serving the local community for over 30 years by playing music celebrating the Hispanic culture that makes up a large portion of the Houston community. Playing a medley of Mexican classics the leader of the group introduced himself and his group to the crowd.
Following their act, Lopez enlisted fellow comedian Ruben Paul, from Carson, California. Paul is an amazing story teller, really engaging the audience in his stories with his detail and animated motions. He talks about growing up in a hatitian family in California, growing with different cultures in the neighborhood, and his experiences in areas of the country where a diverse culture isn’t as so common.
After a short set, Paul welcomed George Lopez to the stage. Coming out to his classic Lowrider theme, the audience erupted with a standing ovation, there wasn’t a single person not clapping as he strolled the stage, posing for both sides of the audience. Lopez was quick to kick off his night and in good measure as he had a lot of topics to touch on. He began by mentioning his mishap on New Years where he had to walk-out half-way during his set because he fell ill. He assured everyone that he didn’t feel like it was his time, making light of the incident. Along with a variety of topics about the ongoing Covid pandemic, Lopez still managed to bring it back to the material that started his career, speaking about what it’s like growing up and being Mexican.
As the the night came to a close, Lopez talked a little bit to the people right in front of the stage and graciously took a beer given to him by a member of the audience, he gave a toast and poured out a sip to the recently deceased Mexican music legend, Vicente Fernandez.
The night was full of laughs and I really enjoyed all the jokes George Lopez brought out, I would definitely catch another show of his the next time he comes to town.
