The cold rain didn’t stop Houston Dynamo fans from filling up Shell Energy Stadium for the club’s season-opener. Dozens of fans waited in the downpour with umbrellas and ponchos for the doors to open—and by kickoff the preferred tailgating parking lot, the enormous one across the street from the stadium, was completely full.

The Texas Derby, a tradition since 2006, is the rivalry series between Houston Dynamo FC and FC Dallas. The winner’s trophy? A replica of an 18th century Mountain Howitzer cannon called “El Capitán.”

On Saturday, February 22, 2025, Houston started strong. A group effort saw forward Ezequiel Ponce redirect defender Griffin Dorsey’s cross, with help from forward Amine Bassi, for an 18th minute goal, the first of the night.

Dallas equalized with a clean goal from forward Petar Musa in minute 55. In the 76th minute Dallas took the lead when forward Anderson Julio scored the game winning goal.
