On the night after Thanksgiving, those fortunate enough to attend Midland’s sold-out show at 713 Music Hall were reminded once again why the trio remains a household name in country music. With many artists seemingly trying to reinvent themselves, Midland is more than comfortable staying true to its roots.
Mark Wystrach, Jess Carson, and Cameron Duddy returned to Houston for the first time since December 2021 and did not disappoint. The group’s vocals harmonized perfectly all night – much to the delight of the thousands in attendance.
Opening with the title track from the newest album Barely Blue, the crowd didn’t miss a beat – singing along to what can be described as an instant classic. From there, Midland went with a combination of tried and true, including crowd favorites of “Playboys”, “Much Too Young”, “Cheatin’ Songs”, and “Drinkin’ Problems”; combined with some of their newer songs, “Lonestar State of Mind”, “Old Fashioned Feeling”, and “Halfway to Heaven.” The crowd, though, belted each song in unison – feeding off the charisma and stage presence of Mark, Jess, and Cameron.
Midland also brilliantly paid homage to both Brooks and Dunn and Stone Temple Pilots – performing covers of “Boot Scootin Boogie” and “Interstate Love Song” that kept the audience in high spirits. The soulful vocals paired with the group’s Austin swagger made it clear why Midland remains a force to be reckoned with in country music. The versatility was nothing short of captivating, with the ability to transition between both classic 90s influence and modern contemporary style paired with the group’s Texas flair leaving us all wanting more.
The energy was infectious, the music was spectacular, but what made it even better was the respect and appreciation Midland showed the audience. They made clear that, without their fans, there’s no telling where they’d be – and you can hear and see it in the show that they put on. Everything was thought through, and they performed each song with a passion that proves why the Grammy-nominated group has been so successful.
As a fan of Midland dating back to their first EP, seeing what they’ve evolved into was special. The show is a must-see, and I can’t recommend them enough. The tour has two more dates in Texas in December, before heading abroad for a European leg of the tour.
