Legendary Stoner Sludge band Melvins did a surprise drop of 2 singles, “I Fuck Around” and “Bouncing Rick” off their upcoming album “Working With God” which drops sometime next year. This album features the 1983 lineup of the Melvins; Buzz Osbourne, Dale Crover, and Mike Dillard. The boys aren’t exactly doing anything revolutionary here, but the 2 tracks are fun enough to add into your Melvin’s rotation.
“I Fuck Around” sees the band “covering” the Beach Boy’s classic “I Get Around” but with the with that classic Melvins oddball-ness. The Melvins “cover” still features the same harmonies, same instrumentation, same riffs, the only difference being the lyrics where lead singer/guitarist King Buzzo just repeats “I Fuck Around”. Out of context of the album, the song is bizarre, and I’m sure that since it’s the album opener especially it’s going to be even weirder. However as of right now there’s not substance to it, so currently it is impossible for me to really have any real thoughts on it.
“Bouncing Rick” is a more traditional rock song similar to the work they did on their 16th studio album “Nude With Boots” as opposed to their sludgier/stoner-ier/dronier tracks. The guitar work is punchy and memorable, the drum work is tight. My only gripe is that Crover’s bass work is completely smushed underneath everything else rendering it essentially not there.
Overall the Melvins have definitely piqued my interest as to their up and coming album.
