To start her set Ella Mai received a warm welcome and had great crowd interaction with the fans, creating a great soulful opening for Mary J. Blige. One of Ella Mai’s smash hits “Boo’d up” was a great crowd pleaser. From the bottom to the top; the arena sang “Biddy-da-doo, boo’d up” as she performed. Mai did not disappoint and should be on your list if you have the chance. She is sure to be around for more years to come.
As the queen of hip hop-soul took the stage, the crowd cheered while the smoke slowly covered the floor and the lights began to rise. The sound of heavy drums with red lights flashing in the background and explosions with sparks sounded off as the super star started to emerge. With actual flames going off behind her, Mary destroyed the stage beginning with a few new hits such as “Good Morning Gorgeous” and “Rent Money” getting a great response from the fans before slowly getting into her old school bag. This was a concert that was sure to get you out of your seat, Houston had the experience to witness a legend on Saturday night singing along to entire songs including alilabs. After a short intermission Blige proceeded to perform another set of classics like “Just Fine” which required full crowd participation, it was something about her classics that really got the crowd going. She also gave wise words of wisdom to women in the crowd between songs, speaking on being true to yourself overcoming tough obstacles.
