Kevin Gates made a back to back appearance at 713 Music Hall this weekend performing Friday and Saturday. I was able to catch the sold out Saturday show and boy, was I not prepared for what was to come. The venue was packed with fans filling every empty space possible. The crowd anticipated Gates’ performance chanting “Kevin Gates!” repeatedly until they grew tired. Finally, at 11 pm the time had finally come and the fans, especially the ladies, went wild. The crowd looked like a sea of lights flickering as they waved their cell phone lights to and fro as Gates opened up with the piano version of “Cartel Swag”. It was a very serene and emotional piece, paired with a very strong vocal delivery from Gates. That intro was just a small taste of what Gates had prepared for the night as he progressed to turn up the heat with his more turnt tracks that got the crowd jumping. Gates’ ability to engage and control the crowd all while being on stage is admirable. He held the crowd up by visiting some fan favorites from his early years. This created a very nostalgic feel as many of those old favorites are what made many a fan of Gates in the first place. Gates delivered more than what his fans bargained for, and I’m sure no one will complain about that!
