Kelly Clarkson, the first-ever winner of American Idol and a proud Texan, took the RodeoHouston stage on a beautiful Saturday evening and delivered an electrifying performance in her return to the rodeo after 22 years.
The American singer-songwriter is known for her versatility and pitch-perfect high notes, and all of that was on full display at the rodeo. Her time on stage felt both breathtaking and far too short.
Clarkson, clad in her signature sequined jumpsuit, burst onto the star-shaped stage with “Favorite Kind of High” and “Behind These Hazel Eyes,” immediately bringing the crowd to its feet and electrifying NRG Stadium.

Clarkson’s vocal range is truly out of this world. Even the sound system at NRG initially struggled to keep up as she powered through “My Life Would Suck Without You.” Fortunately, the audio quickly caught up for the remainder of the set though the brief moment only served as a testament to Clarkson’s powerhouse vocals.
This marked Clarkson’s first RodeoHouston appearance since 2004, when she performed alongside Jessica Simpson. During her return, Clarkson also treated the crowd to a cover of “It’s a Little Too Late” by Tanya Tucker, effortlessly making the country hit her own in true Kelly Clarkson fashion.
Throughout the set, Clarkson shared lighthearted moments and personal tidbits with the audience. She revealed that her favorite song to sing is “Walk Away,” while her daughter’s favorite is “Heartbeat Song,” drawing cheers and smiles from the crowd.

The stage lighting, sweeping visual effects, and Clarkson’s effortless chemistry with her band made the performance feel larger than life. During “Didn’t I,” she gave her band a moment in the spotlight, and they proved exactly why they belonged there, matching her intensity and amplifying the energy of the show.
Clarkson then slowed things down with a heartfelt solo rendition of “Don’t You Wanna Stay,” the duet she originally recorded with country star Jason Aldean.
She also performed her most recent single, “Where Have You Been,” sharing how grateful she felt to be back in Texas. Clarkson explained that her newest music, released under her own label, embraces a mix of genres, much like Texas itself.
Clarkson closed out the night with a powerful run of fan favorites, including “Miss Independent,” “Stronger,” and perhaps her most iconic anthem, “Since U Been Gone,” sending the entire stadium to its feet as thousands of fans belted out every lyric.
It was a beautiful evening and an unforgettable performance. Let’s just hope it doesn’t take another 22 years for Kelly Clarkson to return to the RodeoHouston stage.
