Hundreds gathered throughout the day at Huston-Tillotson University in Austin, Texas for the Soul Food Truck Fest on June 18, 2022 for an early Juneteenth celebration. Those lucky enough to get Judge’s tickets got to try all 15 trucks and vote for their favorites. The winner took home $1000. The festival brought out multiple black owned businesses including the food trucks, various business vendors, and more. Later in the evening, the fest offered live music.
Upon entry, judges were handed 15 tickets for taste testers from the food trucks, one voting coin, and 2 drink tickets. After trying the 15 trucks, we cast our vote for the truck entitled, “South African Food Affair”. The taste test provided was Chicken Curry and Peli Peli Chicken. Both had equal parts flavor and spice. After finishing the samples from all 15 trucks we made our way back to the South African Food Affair truck for a full sized Chicken Curry dish. Our next favorite was a New Orleans inspired truck called, “Hurry Back Catering” who dished up a very delicious Voodoo Catfish.
The heat did not stop anyone from having a good time. Attendees entertained themselves with dancing, cooking demos, the full bar, and yard games. The kids bounced around in the bouncy house or traded in the heat for the air conditioned arcade truck. Overall it was a beautiful experience full of community and great food.
