Despite his controversial exit from the Houston Rockets, James Harden was back in Houston this past weekend to raise money for charity and give back to the community that helped make him a star, and celebrate his birthday.
While other celebrities and sports stars seem to forget about Houston the minute they leave, Harden has made a point to stay involved. One way he’s done this is to host his annual JH-Town Weekend, a weekend full of fun events usually including a star studded concert and a celebrity sporting event.
This year’s James Harden and Friends Celebrity Concert was hosted by Bayou Music Center and put on by Spotify’s Rap Caviar. The packed line-up included Houston’s own Trae tha Truth, Maxo Kream, and Monaleo, as well as up and coming stars like OMB Bloodbath, Lil Moe, and Lil Guap. The night was capped off with performances from Don Toliver, Gunna, Young Thug, and Houston’s biggest Rager, Travis Scott. Most of these artists can be found headlining their own tours, it was truly a special event to have them all under one roof.
Harden’s celebrity friends filled the VIP area, they could be seen in the balcony to the right of the stage. Lil Baby, Kevin Durant, Slim Thug, Russell Westbrook, all made an appearance.
DJ Mr. Rogers kept the vibes going between sets, then passed the torch to Chase-B to get the crowd ready for the main event, Travis Scott. The lights went down and Scott came out to a roar of screams, and the glow of phone lights. The venue was packed with Houstonians ready to rage after a year and a half of no live music.
Mosh pits opened up and kids crowd surfed as Scott performed a few of his biggest hits before he turned DJ for the night. He Played a 20 minute DJ set with his DJ best Friend, Chase-B as Harden and other celebrities danced across the stage and the screen behind them lit up with psychedelic images. He capped the night off by having the crowd sing Fun’s 2011 hit, We are Young, to the Birthday Boy, James Harden.
