Tuesday night Houston metalheads received one heck of a lineup with Cradle Of Filth, Devil Driver, Black Satellite, and ONI. Popular downtown venue Warehouse Live hosted the shenanigans and prepared us all for an interesting night to come.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to be there in time for the first opening band, ONI but was told by many peers throughout the night of how “wickedly badass” they were and how they definitely started the night off on the right track.
Right when I was able to arrive, Black Satellite was walking on stage and I was instantly drawn into Vocalist Larissa Vale’s style. Dead serious, this girl has the LOOK. Covered in leather attire with shiny silver spikes, I was very curious to hear her sing since I’ve never heard of this band before until now. Once they started playing I was actually impressed. She does have that very strong NY accent which was especially interesting when they decided to do their Rammstein cover of “Sonne”. Imagine hearing someone speaking German with a New York accent. She absolutely nailed it though and the crowd loved it.
Devil Driver was next and I always love being able to catch them when they are in town. The last time I was blessed with their presence was back in 2019, also here in the ballroom at Warehouse Live.
Lead Singer Dez has been pretty open with his struggles of getting back to normal since having covid, and how much it has taken a toll on his heart and overall health so I could tell he wasn’t his most energetic self rightfully speaking, but if you didn’t see Devil Driver before you wouldn’t have even noticed. Dez still has spunky energeticness to him and the crowd went insane once their first track of the night “Keep Away From Me” blasted throughout the room. With a 12 song setlist ranging from all of their classics and including one Awolnation cover song, Devil Driver put on a fantastic set. The energy, visuals, and the obvious snarling growls of Dez really reminded me of why I love these dudes so much. If they come to your city you really need to check them out.
To end a wicked night, we obviously had to end it with the most wicked band, and clearly the real reason 89% of the concert goers were here for, UK’s masterminds Cradle Of Filth.
With extreme stage decor and bloody visuals on large screens, we all knew it was time for this ballroom to really get weird. Starting off with “Heaven Torn Asunder” and “Gilded Cunt” lead mastermind and well known vocalist Dani Filth was here and ready to blow our minds with what was yet to come for the night. This was my first time seeing Cradle Of Filth and obviously my first time being able to photograph them and I’ve got to say, they are a BLASSSSSST. Each member (especially guitarist Marek who deserves his own shout out) are so engaging with the fans and photographers and it was quite obvious they know exactly how to put on a great energy filled performance. I was actually pretty mind-blown by how tight and smooth they all sounded, and even more shocked that Cradle Of Filth isn’t playing even larger venues.
The night continued with a mix of songs from previous albums and pretty much everyone’s favorite track, “Nymphetamine”. I also think that’s when I really noticed just how amazing Keyboardist Zoe Federoff’s voice is. Overall, Cradle Of Filth exceeded my expectations and I’m so glad I was able to catch them here in Houston, especially with my camera in hand.
