Last night, 27-year old R&B artist Giveon made his quick return to the Houston stage. This time his sold-out show was held at the impressive and newest concert venue added to the downtown area, 713 Music Hall. This was personally my first time seeing him live and I knew it would be packed but to hear that fans were lined up as early as 11AM to see the L.A. native singer-songwriter shocked even myself. Houston summers are no joke too. Even though “I’m too old” to be engaging in such hardcore escapades now, I can’t help but laugh and reminisce because it was definitely something I did a few times in my younger days. You know, before “adulting.”
This tour centered on his debut album Give or Take. An album created intentionally without guest features in order to be more focused on having an honest conversation between him and his mother discussing love, heartbreak, fame, and his life in general over the past two years. Personally, I love that and those little snippets of dialogue sprinkled in between the tracks are gold for me and something his future self will be thankful to have to look back on. Maybe it’s the unofficial historian in me that values and often partakes in documenting my own life and those around me. At the end of “…Lost Me” Giveon’s mom says, “there’s no such thing as perfect people, so just learn from it and move forward.”
As for the show itself, which sold out the night of, (his last tour instantly sold out too), was a glorious night filled with smooth baritone vocals, breathtaking lights and production, and the highest of feels. The crowd came out to cheer and cry and celebrate the beloved anthem that is “Heartbreak Anniversary.”
I have a tremendous amount of respect for this man. A couple of fun moments that were a highlight for me to witness was watching him play, “Rock, Paper, Scissors” with a fan in the crowd. Another was him signing merch and taking pics and videos with numerous fans towards the latter half of the show. It’s not something you typically see at shows this big and so for him to do that just confirms that Giveon is a man for the community and shows how much he really loves and adores his fans.
“When It’s All Said And Done..” big love and respect to those fans willing to “..Take Time” to wait hella early in line and a great deal of love and respect to Giveon “For Tonight.” Come back again soon. 🫶
