Family Reunion at 713 Music Hall: Jane’s Addiction Rocks Houston

After hearing one of their songs for the first time in a skate video, Jane’s Addiction’s iconic sound and energy seized my attention immediately. The song was “Stop,” which I now know as one of their most famous songs, but I quickly realized their B-sides and deep cuts were just as solid as their hits. Even though their rise to fame and recognition occurred during the 1980s and ’90s, their sound still heavily influences today’s alternative rock scene.

Getting all the original members in the same room to tour seemed to be a struggle for the band for all sorts of reasons, but for this tour and, hopefully, for an album, they have decided to team back up. Jane’s Addiction’s release, “Imminent Redemption,” gives fans hope that new music is coming, bringing the same energy they had all those years back.

Their opening song, “Kettle Whistle,” which appeared on their first album, set a precedent for the night as fans would get a taste of all their works. Highlighted songs included “Ain’t No Right,” “Jane Says,” “Mountain Song,” and “Pigs in Zen.”  Ending the night with “Stop,” the song that started it all, was a full-circle moment for me.

To satisfy the rowdy crowd of die-hard fans, they gave a one-song encore of “Been Caught Stealing,” which included a face-melting solo from Dave Navarro that offered glimpses of early years from the rockstar—all those in attendance who showed up for an explosion of a show left with their cravings satisfied.
