Houston weather is so unpredictable but for one night, the night of Cuco’s tour stop at White Oak Music Hall, the temperature was just right. I was so relieved as he was performing outside on the lawn which was packed to the brim with fans. As the sun set behind the distant skyline, the energy from the crowd was contagious. Cuco took the stage at around 8:30 p.m., rocking a sleeveless Chalino “Corridos Pesados” T-shirt showing off his tattoos. He opened the night with the throwback track “Ego Death In Thailand,” the moody bedroom pop track was met with enthusiasm from the crowd. However, Cuco paused the show during the second song, “Junkies and Rarities,” to ensure a fainting fan received medical attention, emphasizing the sense of community in the audience.
Throughout the night, Cuco’s care for his fans’ well-being was evident, as he stopped the show multiple times for similar situations. He expressed his happiness to be back in Houston, recalling how it was the first Texas city he ever performed in back in 2017. Apologizing for his congestion as he was recovering from being sick, he excitedly announced that he’d just finished his new album and performed an unreleased track title “My 45,” followed by the popular cover of “Piel Canela” originally by Bobby Capó, sparking a massive sing-along.
Cuco’s interactions with fans were humorous and personal, with a few lucky attendees receiving autographs on random items like shoes, vinyl records and even a stuffed Bucee’s beaver (If you know, you know). He wrapped up the night with heartfelt gratitude, saying he hoped to inspire his fans through his music and his journey to sobriety. I truly admire him for that, as I also choose to live substance-free. It’s always refreshing to see someone with a platform use their influence to promote a clean, healthy lifestyle. It feels empowering when artists advocate for choices that align with personal growth and well-being.
The show ended with beloved tracks “Lava Lamp“, “Amor De Siempre,” “Sunnyside,” and “Lo Que Siento,” with Cuco waving a Mexican flag before departing the stage. As fans began to leave, the Mexican band Bronco’s song “Amigo Bronco” (a personal fave) played, adding an unexpected but amusing close to the evening. Fans sang along as they made their way home, humming the tune all the way to their cars. Overall, I had a blast ! I danced the night away, swayed and sang along to my faves. If you are a Cuco fan, don’t hesitate to snag a ticket to his next show. If you aren’t a fan, look into becoming one. You won’t be disappointed.
