CA7RIEL & Paco Amoroso crashed into the mainstream with a mix of eccentric energy and genre-bending sound. Buenos Aires duo are back and this time flipping their viral success into something totally unexpected: a four-track EP and a surreal short film that dives deep into the absurdity of fame.
In under a year, the pair has become one of the most exciting names in Latin experimental rap. Their now-iconic NPR Tiny Desk Concert from October 2024 which was meant to spotlight their debut album Baño María has ended up doing a lot more for the duo. It launched them into a wider spotlight, giving fans a front-row seat to their unfiltered personalities and explosive stage presence.
With over 27 million views and counting, that Tiny Desk is officially the most-watched of 2024. And rather than ride the viral wave passively, CA7RIEL & Paco Amoroso doubled down with PAPOTA, a project that’s as clever as it is chaotic. I absolutely love that they did not sit as one hit wonders but have instead taken advantage and taken major hold of this viral spike in their career. Personally, they have me by a chokehold with their experimental sounds and personalities.
The EP acts as a companion to a 16-minute short film, which picks up right after the Tiny Desk performance. The two are still in the same outfits, but the story spirals into a wild satire about chasing a Latin Grammy, complete with shady label execs, industry digs, and just enough weirdness to keep you glued. It takes jabs at AI, award show politics, addiction, and the over-the-top spectacle of sex and fame, all while keeping things funny and visually sharp.
Each track in PAPOTA is tied to a scene in the film, but they hold up on their own too with well-produced, layered, and undeniably their style. If you’ve only seen them on Tiny Desk, this is a perfect next step into their universe. Seriously, dive into their discography because you will get lost. You will be taken into a whole new little world created and molded into perfect imperfection by this duo. Baño Maria is a MUST listen, but also check out their own individual pieces of work “SAETA” by Paco Amoroso or “EL DISKO” by Ca7riel. After listening to them separately, you will truly understand why this duo is a perfect mash up.
Moreover, visually, the short film leans into their off-kilter humor and aesthetic. It’s playful but polished, giving both artists space to flex their personalities while pushing their storytelling to new places. Even with just four new songs, PAPOTA confirms what fans already know: CA7RIEL & Paco Amoroso are here to break rules, make noise, and have a damn good time doing it.
