Day two of El Ultimo Tour Del Mundo tour started with a bang! Multiple lines of fans wrapped around the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas for Bad Bunny’s second sold out concert in a row! Two sold out shows, back to back, came as no surprise. Bad Bunny has been one of the biggest names in reggaeton and latin trap music for years and tonight’s show was no exception. The crowd was full of excitement with tons of fans fully dressed in Bad Bunny merch from head to toe. The energy from the fans outside radiated pure excitement as they got closer and closer to the entrance doors.
The excitement from the fans exploded as they entered the Toyota Center. Bad Bunny was set to perform a two hour set with no opening acts. A DJ was amping out classic reggaeton music to keep the energy flowing. Songs like Gasolina by Daddy Yankee and Quiero Bailar by Ivy Queen, really set the vibe for the night’s performance. The stage was not your ordinary set up. In lieu of your typical concert stage setup, Bad Bunny set up the entire arena floor in a rectangular enclosure with a huge semi truck in the middle, with the bed of the truck acting as the actual stage. The bed/stage platform had the ability to flatten and be raised higher and also lit up with videos and lyrics of each song. Above the enclosure there were seven Jumbotrons that turned and lowered with flashing lights surrounding each one.
As the clock got closer to nine, the music started to pump up the fans as some of his hits were blared over the speakers. The entire arena was filled with countless fans singing along word for word. Suddenly the lights dimmed down and the semi truck started to rev its engine as flames shot up high in the air. Fans began to shout “Benito! Benito! Benito!” as he finally made his entrance from the center of the semi. The opening song was El Mundo Es Mio from his latest album El Ultimo Tour Del Mundo. Bad Bunny was dressed in khaki cargo pants with oversized brown pockets with a matching vest, brown tee, and his trademark Adidas forum shoes. His microphone was in the shape of a diamond encrusted skull with glowing red eyes and the handle was a matching diamond encrusted spine. The stage was flooded with red lights as Bad Bunny made his way to the top. The crowd was in full awe, the music paused and Bad Bunny took a second just to look at everyone and said “Dónde está mi gente de Houston! (Where are my people from Houston!)” Bad Bunny had a live band with him and a team of dancers. The way Bad Bunny and his crew fed off each other’s performance was electric. You could tell that everyone involved in the performance was having such a good time and giving it their all.
The concert seemed to get louder and crazier as the night went on. Bad Bunny performed hit after hit with no break in between. Songs like Yo Visto Asi, Maldita Pobreza, and Sorry Papi. really had the crowd going. Things seemed to slow down as Bad Bunny took a second to say “Gracias Houston, gracias por venir por mi. Yo amo a Houston. Estas son canciones que son bien especiales que escribe en el lockdown. Con mucho sentimiento profundo en mi corazón. Cierra los ojos y piensa en una persona que ya no está con nosotros. (Thank you Houston, thank you for coming for me. I love Houston. These are songs that are very special that I wrote in the lockdown. These songs are full of sentiment from the bottom of my heart. Close your eyes and think of a person who is no longer with us.)” The stage flooded with blue lights and the platform floor beamed with constellations and a sea of galactic waves as Bad Bunny began to perform Trellas. This song stood out to me the most because it felt so close and personal. It was a stark difference from all the previous upbeat songs. Bad Bunny took a second to remind everyone “Todos aqui somos estrellas (We are all stars)”. This performance was the only time we got to slow down and just reflect on life and how lucky we are to be here at this moment.
Bad Bunny ended his set with a cascade of fast paced hits. The performance that completed the night for me was Yo Perreo Sola from his second studio album YHLQMDLG. This song really embodies old school reggaeton with heavy percussive rhythms and a mixture of singing and rapping. As the beat began to drop, the dancers flocked onstage wearing red vinyl bodysuits as an homage to the famous music video in which Bad Bunny dresses as a woman in red vinyl dress. Bad Bunny wrote this song to highlight how men can also respect and be and activist for women’s rights and the LGBTQ community. He stayed true to that message by having an inclusive crew of dancers of all shapes, sizes, genders, and ethnicities. The performance was super hype, not a single soul was sitting in their seat. The platform split into three horizontal sections, Bad Bunny performing in the middle as the dancers danced on the outer two sections. The dancers gave it everything they had. As the dancers began to twerk and do backflips, fire started shooting up from the perimeter of the platform imitating the beat of the song. I really enjoyed this performance because it was just so fun to watch the music video come to life and watch everyone, including the audience and Bad Bunny, twerk without a care in the world.
Bad Bunny really outdid himself with this tour. Everything from production, dancers, live band, and pyrotechnics was on another level. I caught myself multiple times throughout the show just trying to take it all in. Not many performers can pull off a two hour set with no break or openers! If you ever get a chance to experience a Bad Bunny concert you definitely do not want to miss it.
Bad Bunny will be returning to Houston later this year, on September 1 and 2 to perform at Minute Maid Park during his World’s Hottest Tour.
