03 Greedo sets a new standard for himself in creating a great conceptual album with Kenny Beats.

After being sentenced to 20 years in prison in June 2018 for possession of drugs and a firearm , 03 Greedo decided that even that won’t stop his productivity and continued to follow his musical passion. His latest release Netflix & Deal is undoubtedly his best work yet after teaming up with new hip-hop super-producer Kenny Beats.

Greedo started his music career in 2014 while still under the name of Greedy Giddy and between 2014 and 2016 released numerous tracks on SoundCloud and even self–produced six mixtapes himself. He finally changed his name to 03 Greedo in 2016 and in the same year released two more mixtapes. The following year he started his own label, Golden Grenade Empire, under which he released three additional tapes. Later that year he signed with Alamo Records for one million dollars where he released his first two albums: The Wolf of Grape Street and God Level, both of which were completed before he was sentenced to prison. Greedo gained recognition in the hip-hop community and popularity over the internet after collaborating with respectable artist such as Lil Uzi Vert and Smokepurpp.

While getting ready for his time in prison, Greedo was very productive musically and consequently stashed a lot of songs for the upcoming years, that’s how Netflix & Deal was made. Gaining inspiration from films he was watching while still dealing on the streets, every song is inspired by a movie. Mostly from crime and action movies, but you don’t have to guess too much which movie is he relating to as the titles are hints themselves.

All songs on the album have trap sounds, with no exceptions, yet every song it’s very different from the other. You can quickly hear the impact that Kenny Beats adds to the album. If you are familiar with Kenny, you can instantly realize his distinct sounds: grimey melodies, trap beats, and quick tempos. Being a former EDM DJ make Kenny very versatile and that’s why he was able to make a different feel to every song while still maintaining his distinct tone.

The beats aren’t too complex and the lyrics don’t dive too deep, making this and easy album to listen to and one you can keep in heavy rotation. The album is also filled with great features such as Freddie Gibbs, KEY, Buddy, Vince Staples, Maxo Kream and Ohgeesy, making the whole project more diverse and lifting the quality of the project as a whole. With these features we can also put 03 Greedo in another sub-genre with these artists I would call Mainstream Alt Rap (I would describe the sound as different from the mainstream, a bit more creative, but still maintaining the hip hop base, meaningful lyrics, odd inspiration and the versatility with little boundaries).

The album was released on November 22 with an accompanying stop motion music video for “Disco Shit”, showing the creative side of Greedo and the whole idea of how album was conceptualized. We also get to see how album was made with a short behind-the-scene documentary released on Kennys’ YouTube channel.

The album itself isn’t quite a masterpiece, yet it is a very interesting piece of art that I really enjoyed. It isn’t too long, with a nice concept, and nicely packed. As previously mentioned, the production is distinct, but very wavy. We can get a firm feel of Greedo’s capability, and the nice standard he has set for his upcoming projects and songs, while Kenny has made a quality contribution with instrumentals and making another nice project that he can add in his increasingly good discography.
